Recognise romance and money scams
Never send money, airtime, mobile money or gift cards to someone you have not met in person. This applies even if they say it is an emergency.
Warning signs
- Strong declarations of love very quickly.
- Always an excuse not to meet or to video call.
- A sad story: sickness, a stuck parcel, school fees, a visa or travel costs.
- Pressure to move to another app, or to keep the relationship secret.
- Photos that look too perfect, or a profile that does not match what they say.
What to do
- Stop sending messages and do not send any money.
- Block the member, then report them, saying what they asked for.
- Tell a trusted friend or relative. Scammers are good at making people feel they cannot.
- If you already sent money, tell your mobile money provider or bank at once and keep a record.
Protect your personal information
- Do not share your home address, workplace, ID numbers, or bank and mobile money PINs. No one from Teso Soul Connect will ask for your password or PIN.
- Take your time before sharing your phone number or other accounts.
- Be careful with private photos. Once you send a photo you cannot control where it goes.
- Use a strong password you do not use anywhere else.
Meeting for the first time
- Talk for a while first, and meet in a busy public place in daylight.
- Arrange your own transport, and tell a trusted friend or relative where you are going and who you are meeting.
- Keep your phone charged. Do not accept drinks you did not see poured.
- Leave if you feel uncomfortable. You never owe anyone an explanation.
Block, report and control your account
- Block a member from their profile or chat. They disappear from your view and cannot contact you.
- Report a member or a conversation. Reports go to our moderation team, and the person you report is not told who reported them.
- Hide or pause your profile at any time from your profile page.
- Remove messages you sent, or turn on disappearing messages in a chat. These do not stop someone taking a screenshot.
- Download your data or delete your account yourself in Account settings.
Members who are under 18, pretend to be someone else, ask for money, harass others or share offensive content can be suspended. We take reports of anyone who may be under 18 very seriously.
What verification means
A verified email shows a person controls that email address. It does not prove their identity or that everything on their profile is true. Any identity badge we introduce will be explained clearly before it appears.
If something has gone wrong
In immediate danger? Contact the emergency services straight away (Uganda Police: 999 or 112).
- If you are being threatened, blackmailed or pressured about private photos, keep the messages, do not pay, block the person and report to the Police. You can also report them to us.
- If you or someone you know is in an abusive relationship, speak to a trusted person, a local health worker or the Police. We will add a list of local support services here once they are confirmed.
